DEEP SOUTH II
12th May - 3rd July 2011
Opening times:
Tues-Sat:
1.00-5.30pm
Sunday:
2.00-5.30pm
Admission: free
May sees the launch of the
second leg of the travelling Deep South exhibition: a vivid interpretation of our trip to
Antarctica with four of the other artists. It was first shown to great acclaim last Autumn at Dulwich
College - where the explorer Ernest Shackleton went to school. This spring it
travels to The Stables Gallery, Orlean's House in
Twickenham.
As well as Krys's luscious
snowscapes and ingenious 3D interpretations of the abandoned whaling stations,
you can expect to see more of Tracy's stunning photomontages and Beryl Hole's
beautiful ceramics. The photographs
of Kristine Hannon and Joanne Wilkinson will enchant even more visitors with
the beauty and mystery of the Antarctic landscape. Libby Jones will be adding
to her thought-provoking collection of hand made prints and installations,
while renowned naturalist Bruce Pearson, our seventh contributor, captures the
thrill of the wildlife with his spectacular paintings of seals and penguins in
action!
Everything will be for sale alongside reproductions and artists' cards. There will also be a program of talks and workshops, and a raffle of work by the artists.
The Artists:
Kristine
Hannon Belgian
travel writer and photographer passionate about the Antarctic.
(photography - slideshow
installation)

Kristine has had a very interesting life travelling the world
as a professional photographer. Working on a ship in the Southern Ocean is not
a typical Belgian job and certainly not for a woman. At the end of her first
Antarctic season, the company she worked for went bankrupt. With no salary and
no way to get home, she stayed on the ship for about a month. Together with the
21 remaining sailors she crossed the Atlantic to Croatia were the ship was
arrested!
With a unique gift for capturing the moment, Kristine has
brought home the awesome beauty of the Antarctic landscape: salmon pink sunsets
over turquoise bergs, dark seas, glittering ice and poignant vignettes of
compassion amid a relentless battle for survival.
Libby
Jones’ Sculptor
and printmaker. Her work includes installations and book works.
(printmaking - installation)
Libby's work has always been concerned with natural and
scientific phenomena and she has taken this opportunity to address the
environmental concerns of Antarctica head-on. She has produced a number of collagraphic and screen
prints, some provocative, but one centre-piece of the show is her inspiring
iceberg installation complete with dripping water and ticking clocks.
Tracy
Myers Printmaker
and painter interested in natural, historical and social themes.
(photomontage)
This website
Tracy is fascinated by man's battle with this inhospitable
realm and brings to life moments from the history of the Whalers. A gifted
draftswoman, printmaker and designer, she combines all these skills with a deft
touch in digital manipulation to produce images which highlight the stoic - and
sometimes unpredictable - character needed to live and work in a brutal
industry.
Krys
Leach Painter
and curator, who is best known for his seascapes and inspirational techniques.
(painting - curator)
This website
Krys, too, has used the industry as his inspiration. Making
3D paintings from objets trouves, he has
taken full opportunity to exercise his fondness for texture and innovative
techniques to render the intricate tracery of the ice, soft snow and hard
industry.
Beryl
Hole Potter,
teacher and round the world sailor. (ceramics
inspired by Antarctica)
By contrast, Beryl has translated the sway of the Southern
Ocean and the jagged ice into graceful pots and ceramics. The bulk of her work is thrown, reduction fired stoneware; the
contrasting rough textures and smooth surfaces making a perfect expression of ice and stone.
Joanne
Wilkinson Animator,
photographer and world traveller.
(photography)
Joanne has made a photographic study of the teeming animal
and bird life of the region. She has captured the awe and amazement we all felt
and has made these wonderful scenes available to a wider audience.
Bruce
Pearson Painter, printmaker, field naturalist and well known
illustrator. The author of An Artist on Migration.
(printmaking
– painting - notebooks and
sketches)
Bruce joined the group as the seventh artist. A well-known wildlife illustrator and
naturalist, he spent time in South Georgia in the 1970s ringing albatross and
has returned to Antarctica on subsequent occasions. His drawings of Albatross soaring over the Southern Ocean
were produced largely on site and bring the immediacy and drama of the region
right onto the walls.

NORFOLK OPEN STUDIOS 2011
Krys Leach studio open:
Saturday - Monday 28th, 29th & 30th May
Friday - Sunday 3rd, 4th & 5th June.
1000 - 1700
May is also the time for Norfolk
Open Studios 2011. After a break last year, Krys is
returning with renewed vigour and taking the opportunity to showcase his
figurework. Although shown extensively - and to wide acclaim - in the McNeill
Gallery in Hertfordshire, this is a
rare opportunity to see them in their home county. Sometimes contemplative,
other times provocative, they share a sensuality of texture and light which
invites the viewer to lose themselves in the moment ...
WELBORNE ARTS FESTIVAL 2011
Saturday 18th & Sunday19th June
Welborne is now a well
established, well regarded patron of the Arts. Every other year, this enchanting village near Dereham
hosts a biennalle of music,
poetry, talks, sculpture and fine art.
Once again, The Norwich Print Fair will be one it's main attractions, filling a marquee with its usual
popular mix of works by local artists. This provides an interesting alternative to it's main
Autumn show in Norwich, ringing the changes with different exhibitors and a fascinating
line up of demonstrations and talks for all ages and abilities. Under Tracy's thorough and experienced
stewardship, it promises to be another unmissable highlight!
Also at Welborne, this year,
Krys has been invited to install one of the headline events from his days as a
Curator at the Church Street Gallery.
Unlaced - clothing and
the female form
is intended as an elegant reflection on the female image : with clothing
and without it. How womens' bodies have shaped styles through the ages and
vice versa. And how looking askance at clothing can offer unusual
insights ... Some of the work is innovative and eye-opening. Some
is witty. And some is just ravishing. It all adds up to vibrant
Summer celebration that will be a welcome tonic after Winter of austerity!
Our contributors are an exciting mixture of established artists and
newcomers - but all of exceptional talents ;
Louise Richardson (made objects),
Sarah Wilson (etchings),
Helen Dixon (ceramics)
Elaine Nason (paintings and
prints)
Emily Spragge (cyanotypes)
Rebecca Spragge (corsetry)
Tracy Myers (prints and
photomontage)
David Cottrell (paintings)
Krys Leach (paintings)
There will also be a display of fashion through the ages and a revealing
talk by former chair of the Norwich Costume and Textiles Association, Vivienne
Weeks.
